Guwahati: Schools in Assam 's Kamrup Metropolitan district, primarily in Guwahati city, will return to their regular schedules starting Tuesday, as temperatures have dropped following recent rain. The District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO) issued a notice stating that the earlier directive from September 20, which set school hours from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm due to extreme heat, has been rescinded.

The rain over the last few days has brought down the mercury.

"...it is hereby instructed that all Govt./ Provincialised/ Private school under Kamrup Metro district shall follow their regular normal school timing w.e.f 1st October 2024," said the latest order.

The DEEO had earlier also notified the closing of all schools in the district from September 24 to September 27 due to the heat conditions, but the order was revoked with improvement in weather.

Earlier, in Assam ’s Kamrup district all government, provincialised, and private schools were closed from September 24 to September 27 due to excessive heat and rising temperatures.

Authorities stated that the decision has been taken in order to safeguard the students from the ill-effects of exposure to excessive heat, thereby ensuring the health and well-being of the students.

Due to heatwave conditions in parts of Assam , authorities have adjusted school timings in several areas. On Friday, the Assam government released new guidelines to protect students' health during this extreme weather.

Officials from the regional weather office stated that the seven northeastern states— Assam , Meghalaya , Manipur , Mizoram , Tripura, Nagaland , and Arunachal Pradesh —have been experiencing heatwave-like conditions for the past few days.
