Students of a government school took out a protest march in Wayan on Friday demanding stern action against ir teachers over death of a 10-year old girl after being bitten by a snake inside her classroom. Raising slogans and holding placards, students in ir uniforms, took out march through Sulthan Bary town and converged in front of government vocational higher secondary school in Wayan district.

Shehal Sherin, a fifth standard student, died after being bitten by a snake inside her classroom on Wednesday. "We want justice for Shehala. Stern action should be taken against Parents Teachers Association (PTA), teachers who refused to rush student to hospital and doctors who refused to treat her," a student said. A boy student, with a plastic snake wrapped around his neck, said re is t even a first aid box in school where re are snakes sliring everywhere on playground and in classrooms. re are snake pits in many places in school compound, he said. Basic facilities like clean toilets are t available at vocational higher secondary school, some ors said. Meanwhile, Wayan District Sessions Judge A Harris visited school this morning and saw sorry state of school and its premises and said it was unfortunate. "We are taking situation seriously," he told reporters. District Child Welfare Committee (CWC) President K Aravindakshan said based on newspaper reports on death of student, CWC h on ir own registered a case. A detailed report has been sought from Deputy Director of Education department and District Medical Officer on lapses on part of school and hospitals, where child was taken. Meanwhile, government has suspended a casualty medical officer of Bary taluk hospital for t ministering anti-vem to child. Shehala Sherin, a fifth standard student, was taken to hospital over an hour after incident at around 3 p.m on Wednesday, her fellow students h alleged. Though her parents rushed her to four hospitals where anti-vem was ministered and y were told to take child to Kozhikode Medical College hospital, which is about 90 km from Sulthan Bary. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said incident was unfortunate and assured strong action against those responsible for lapse in saving child's life. " teachers are supposed to educate children on how to react in such situations. But in this case, teachers, despite repeated requests from students failed to take child to hospital," chief minister said. Strong action will be taken against those responsible for any lapses in ir duty, Vijayan ded.

Congress leer and Wayan MP, Rahul Gandhi wrote to Vijayan, saying school's "crumbling infrastructure" needed urgent attention of state government. After a preliminary probe, a teacher, Shijil, was suspended for alleged lapse. Kerala Human Rights Commission and Child Rights Protection Commission have registered separate cases.
