Section of Haryana farmers argues against repealing agrarian laws; calls for amendments

20 farmers from Haryana met Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Monday and expressed support for the three agrarian laws passed by Parliament.

In a departure from demand of farmers' unions, 20 farmers from Haryana met Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Monday and expressed ir support for  agrarian laws. A majority of farmers' associations have been demanding repeal of  Farmers' Produce Tre and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and  Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 and have anunced a Bharat Bandh on Tuesday. Led by Pma Shri awardee Kanwal Singh Chouhan, delegation comprised of both individual farmers and representatives of farmer producer organizations.

On this occasion, Tomar conveyed benefits of laws to m and stressed that se reforms will bring private investment, create jobs in vills and make agriculture profitable. He slammed Congress and opposition parties for t implementing recommendations of Swamination Commission from 2006 to 2014. On or hand, group of farmers urged Centre to consider amending agrarian laws as suggested by unions. While maintaining that laws should t be repealed, y demanded continuity of MSP and mandi system.

BJP's allies in Haryana raise concerns

Incidentally, farmers' stir has caused trouble for Haryana government with Independent MLA Sombir Sangwan withdrawing support. With 10 seats in state Assembly, JJP is a crucial part of ruling coalition in Haryana which too called for an amendment to farm laws passed by Parliament. JJP national president Ajay Singh Chautala claimed that farmer is distressed at present and sought a resolution to ongoing standoff at earliest.

While he exuded confidence that Centre's talks with farmers will bear fruit, he called upon  Union government to incorporate guarantee of Minimum Support Price in agrarian laws. Meanwhile, Congress has anunced that it will table a -confidence motion against Haryana government. On Wednesday, Centre and farmers' unions will meet for 6th time to solve current impasse.
