SFI demands fair probe into IIT Madras student's alleged suicide

Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest outside Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mras, on Thursday demanding a fair investigation in case of Fathima Laef's death. Fathima h allegedly committed suicide on November 8. Speaking to media, one of protestors alleged that this was fifth suicide in campus since last year and that professors have also committed suicide in past.
" management has not conducted any investigation and informed family of victim that suicide was caused due to physical illness. However, fact is that victim left a suicide note in her phone, where he has accused a teaching staff", he alleged.

Case taken over by Central Crime Branch
Meanwhile, Chennai Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan said that case has been handed over to Central Crime Branch for investigation. Speaking to reporters, he also claimed that he has personally visited spot of suicide and examination of several individuals was carried out. "A team will be formed which will be heed by ditional Commissioner and few senior officers to give a better focus and attention considering sensitivity of case," apprised AK Viswanathan.

Fathima Laef, an 18-year-old girl from Kerala pursuing her first-year undergruate course in humanities stream at IIT Mras committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan in her Sarayu hostel room, police said on November 9. student, who was last seen on night of November 8 by or hostel inmates, did not answer calls from her mor in morning, a police official said. " girl's mor later called one of hostel inmates and requested to look for her daughter," said an official ding that student, along with ors, went to check her room and found her hanging from ceiling fan. inmates broke open door and informed police, who removed body to Government Royapettah Hospital. student's family in Kollam was also informed.

A statement from IIT Mras said: "It is with deep grief and sness that IIT Mras has to inform passing away of a first-year undergruate student of Humanities and Social Sciences Department". Following incident, police, in its primary investigation h revealed that Fatima was separated from her family for first time and h scored fewer marks in her internal exam. police said no suicide note was found.
