Sharad Pawar seconds Mamata Banerjee on NRC & CAA, expresses willingness to protest
Responding to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s letter seeking the formulation of a plan to ‘save democracy’, NCP chief Sharad Pawar expressed his solidarity.

Responding to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s letter seeking formulation of a plan to ‘save democracy’, NCP chief Shar Pawar expressed his solidarity. Pawar pledged his support to stand against implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act and National Register of Citizens. Moreover, he expressed his willingness to be a part of a concerted strategy to take on Narendra Modi-led government at Centre.

Mamata Banerjee calls for opposition unity
On December 23, Banerjee wrote to Pawar observing that citizens of country irrespective of caste and creed feared CAA and NRC. She argued that it was imperative for opposition to come toger and rise against "draconian" regime. West Bengal CM contended that students of India h risen against Centre.

CAA & NRC explained
While CAA is a legislation that has been passed by both Houses of Parliament, government has described NRC as "a rmal process" to register one's name in Citizens’ Register. Though re has been formal anuncement of a nationwide NRC so far, many leers of BJP including Union Home Minister Amit Shah have stated that it would commence very soon. CAA seeks to provide citizenship to mirity communities namely Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Banglesh and Pakistan.
CAA will be applicable to members of se communities having arrived in India on or before December 31, 2014. Moreover, y will t be considered as illegal migrants. ditionally, mandatory residence period for naturalised citizenship for se communities has been reduced to 5 years.

Nationwide protests
re have been widespre protests against CAA and NRC in various parts of country. opposition's main contention is that CAA violates Constitutional principle of Right to Equality. Furrmore, protesters have raised apprehensions over implementation of CAA and NRC in combination.
