Sikkim: President Kovind approves extension of Special Marriage Act

On Monday, President Ram Nath Kovind approved the extension of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, under which inter-religion weddings can be registered, to Sikkim.

President Ram Nath Kovind has approved extension of Special Marri Act, 1954, under which inter-religion weddings can be registered, to Sikkim. Punitive provisions for violation of Act will also come into force in rastern state with publication of a tification by Union Home Ministry.

Home Ministry anunces extension of Special Marri Act

"In exercise of powers conferred by clause (n) of Article 371F of Constitution, President hereby extends Special Marri Act, 1954 (43 of 1954) to State of Sikkim, subject to certain modifications," home ministry tification said. Special Marri Act provides for a special form of marri in certain cases, for registration of such and certain or marris and for divorce. If those marrying under Act have a living spouse, shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine.

Anyone marrying under Act, if tries to conceal a former marri from person with whom subsequent marri is contracted, shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine.
