During the 17th edition of Devi Awards, Irani said that in the 2019 general elections, her win against Rahul Gandhi was proof that she never treated the people of Amethi as vote bank. She further added that she does not believe in acting when in politics. Smriti Irani, without naming Rahul Gandhi stated that had she been acting, she would not be able to replace the 'family that has been ruling in Amethi for the last five decades'.
'When people go without food and you as a political leader stand on their shoulder and become the prime minister, that is not an aspect I take comfort in. Possibly because in five years I did not treat them as vote bank. I actually associated with them either as colleagues or family,' Irani said.
