Tamil Nadu: Disaster Management Secy condemns Sujith Wilson's death

After the death of 2-year-old Sujith Wilson on Tuesday, J Radhakrishnan, the Tamil Nadu Disaster Management secretary ensured that steps would be taken to make sure that there were no repeats of such incidents in the future. Adding to his statement he said, "all the borewells should be closed."

Sujith Wilson passed away at 2:15 a.m.
The saddening news of Sujith's demise was released to the press by Revenue Secretary J Radhakrishnan on Tuesday at 2:15 am. On Friday, October 25, Sujith Wilson fell into a 600 feet unused borewell. When his parents realised that he was missing for 20 minutes, they informed the local authorities immediately. The authorities rushed to the spot with the fire department to rescue the child. Other officials including the District Collector, the Police Chief of the district also reached the spot immediately.

'Rescue efforts were carried out day and night'
Sujith Wilson's mangled body was brought out by rescue authorities from deep inside the unused borewell on Tuesday. Expressing grief over the 2-year-old's death, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Palaniswami said he had deputed three ministers and Revenue AdministrationCommissioner J Radhakrishnan, to oversee rescue operations. "Many difficulties were faced when a separate borewell (shaft) was being dug near the one where Wilson was trapped due to the presence of hard rocks. Overcoming all of them, rescue efforts were carried out day and night," he said in a statement. According to the Tamil Nadu CM, the little boy could not be saved despite modern equipment being deployed and the best efforts put in by the rescue team.
