Sunderbans tiger count increases to 96 from 88: Official

The number of tigers in the Sunderbans reserve forest in West Bengal has increased to 96 from the previous estimate of 88, an official said on Wednesday.

At present, number of big cats is 96 in Sunderbans, Chief Wildlife Warden Ravi Kant Sinha told PTI. previous number of Royal Bengal Tigers in mangrove forest, released in 2019, was 88, he said, ding that it was based on big cat census in 2018.

Forest Minister Rajib Bandyophyay said that rise in number of tigers in Sunderbans is a "welcome development".. Among 4,200 square km area in Sunderbans, 3,700 square km is habitat of big cats.

"We need to increase mangrove cover in a bid to provide for more to tigers in coming days," he said.

This is first time in history of Sunderbans tiger census that number of big cats shot up by eight from previous such exercise, official said.

" tiger census can never be exact. It shows trend. But it is heartening that tiger population in Sunderbans is increasing," Sinha said.

latest census was done primarily by camera trapping technique along with some or latest methods, he said.

He said 768 cameras were installed in tiger habitat by department, assisted by WWF India.

Sinha said rise in tiger population can be attributed to conducive habitat including ideal mating condition.

"However, figure is an estimated number based on our tiger census. re can be few more or less than 96. Due to terrain of Sunderbans which is crisscrossed by creeks, hecount of every tiger is t possible," he ded.
