Supreme Court gets four new judges, attains full strength of 34

President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday has signed warrants for appointments of four new judges of Supreme Court attaining full strength of 34 judges. y will likely take ir oaths on Monday. As per reports, Supreme Court Collegium led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi h recommended four high court judges for appointment to apex court.
New SC judges
appointed judges include Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Krishna Murari, Himachal high court Chief Justice V Ramasubramanian, Rajasthan HC CJ S Ravindra Bhat and Kerala HC CJ Hrishikesh Roy.

Increased number of judges
Earlier, President Ram Nath Kovind h signed into law a bill which seeks to increase sanctioned strength of judges in Supreme Court from 30 to 33 besides Chief Justice of India. Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill was passed by Parliament in August. With vacancy, strength of apex court was 31, including chief justice of India. After law comes into force, sanctioned strength of SC became 33, besides CJI. This move to increase strength of judges by 3 or 10 per cent comes against backdrop of rising cases in top court which stand at nearly 60,000.

CJI Ranjan Gogoi's letter to PM
In June, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking to increase number of judges in Supreme Court as well as raise retirement of high court judges to 65 years. Justice Gogoi h also urged Prime Minister to make tenure appointments of retired top court judges and high court judges under Articles 128 and 224A of Constitution respectively to clear backlog of cases pending for years.

Chief Justice h written three letters to PM, saying that re were more than 58,000 cases that were pending in Supreme Court and number was increasing due to new cases every day. Because of a short of judges, required number of constitution benches to decide important cases involving questions of law were t being formed.
