Surat On Alert After 1.63 lakh Cusecs of Water Discharged From Ukai Dam
Around 1.63 lakh cusecs of water was discharged from Ukai dam as Gujarat continues to receive rainfall. Surat administration is on high alert.
Surat: With inflows exceeding 1.43 lakh cusecs into the Ukai dam, the local administration have announced that around 1.85 lakh cusecs will be discharged. As of now, the discharge rate had been kept at 1.63 lakh cusecs until Monday evening.
Water Levels Near Danger Mark
The dam's current water level is 336.32 feet, close to the rule level of 340 feet, necessitating increased discharge due to the heavy rainfall in the dam's catchment area.
The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), district administration, and irrigation authorities are closely monitoring the situation, especially as water from various sources is anticipated to flow into the Tapi River. The combined effects of the discharge from the Ukai dam, heavy rainfall, and the high tide associated with the new moon are expected to increase the water level in the Tapi.
“We are keeping a close watch on the water level in the river and our teams are prepared to take immediate actions if it rises. At the current discharge rate, there is no immediate threat of flooding in the city areas,” an SMC official said.
Meanwhile, several parts of Gandhinagar witnessed severe waterlogging, disrupting traffic in the region on Tuesday.
