Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced a public holiday on October 16, tomorrow, due to the forecast of extremely heavy rainfall. This decision comes after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the formation of a low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, impacting the southern coast.

The IMD has indicated that an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is expected to cause isolated extremely heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu. Residents are advised to remain cautious as conditions may worsen.

The government’s declaration of a public holiday aims to ensure the safety of citizens amidst the predicted severe weather conditions. The Chief Minister’s Office confirmed the decision today, urging people to stay updated with weather advisories.

The Government accordingly issues the following orders:

  1. All Government offices including the offices of Public Undertakings Corporations, Boards, etc., in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Chengalpet and Kancheepuram will be closed on 16.10.2024 (Wednesday).
  2. However, all essential services, such as Police, Fire Service. local bodies, milk supply, water supply, hospitals/medical shops, Banks, Financial Institutions, power supply, transport of vegetables, goods and other essential goods, Transport, MTC, MRTS CMRL, Railways, Airport, Airlines Services, Port Services, Export and Import institutions, fuel outlets, hotels/ restaurants, etc., and all the offices engaged in disaster response, relief and rescue activities shall function as usual.
  3. All shops and other commercial establishments shall function

Accordingly, the following notification will be published in the extraordinary issue of the Tamil Nadu Gazette on the 10th of October 2024.
