Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), part of the Tata Group's hospitality arm, has recently inked deals for two Taj-branded resorts on the islands of Suheli and Kadmat in Lakshadweep, India’s smallest union territory. Set to open in 2026, these resorts emphasize a commitment to sustainability and the preservation of the delicate island ecosystem.

As India’s largest hospitality company, IHCL views these signings as a testament to its innovative and pioneering spirit. Having successfully contributed to the global popularity of destinations like Rajasthan, Kerala, Goa, and the Andamans, the company now aims to offer a unique and environmentally conscious experience to travelers.

Strategic move amid diplomatic tensions

This strategic move aligns with the promotion of Lakshadweep as a premier vacation destination for Indian tourists, particularly in the backdrop of strained relations between India and the Maldives. The diplomatic tensions prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage Indian tourists to choose Lakshadweep over the Maldives during his visit in December 2023.

Details of the Taj resorts

The Taj Suheli is set to feature 110 rooms, including 60 beach villas and 50 water villas, while the Taj Kadmat will offer 110 rooms, consisting of 75 beach villas and 35 water villas. The latter, known as Cardamom Island, boasts a coral landscape, a vast lagoon, and a marine protected area vital for the nesting of marine turtles.

IHCL further expansion

In addition to the Lakshadweep ventures, IHCL has expanded its portfolio with Jaagir Manor, a SeleQtions hotel in Dudhwa, Uttar Pradesh. This 20-room establishment, nestled amidst orchards and forests, provides a blend of heritage rooms dating back to the 1940s and luxurious villas. This diversification signifies IHCL's ongoing efforts to offer diverse and enriching hospitality experiences across India.
