New Delhi: Sources within Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) have confirmed to Republic that Telegram, popular messaging platform, is compliant with India’s Information Techlogy (IT) rules. This information comes amid ongoing scrutiny of platform following allegations that it was used in connection with recent NEET-UG paper leak. Telegram is also facing scrutiny in or countries. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested in France on Saturday over allegations that his messaging app facilitated organized crime. 

In a conversation with Republic, MHA sources clarified that if Telegram had t been compliant with IT rules, it would t be allowed to operate in country. "If Telegram would t have been compliant, n it would t be allowed. So yes, platform is compliant with IT rules," sources confirmed.

Will Telegram be banned in India like TikTok?

issue of compliance extends beyond Telegram. MHA sources pointed out that any platform without a presence in India poses significant challenges in terms of control and regulation. However, y emphasized that decision to ban a platform like Telegram, similar to action taken against TikTok, depends entirely on findings of ongoing investigations. "Wher it can be banned or t can only be decided based on what comes out of investigation," sources stated.

Sources within Ministry of Education have revealed that following a statement made by Education Minister, a formal complaint was lodged with Ministry of Electronics and Information Techlogy (MEITY). This complaint highlighted possible connection between NEET-UG paper leak and use of dark web. "We believe it was also forwarded to MHA, and ncies are looking into it," informed sources in Ministry of Education said.

"Telegram was one platform on which papers were distributed, and so obviously it would be looked into. exact status of investigation, however, is t kwn," y added.
