'Those who don't understand Gandhi talk about NRC': Congress slams BJP

West Bengal Congress President Somen Mitra lashed out at BJP-led government at Centre on Wednesday saying those who do t understand principles of Mahatma Gandhi, are talking about NRC and driving out Muslims from country.

BJP hits back

BJP was quick to retort, saying that Far of Nation is t personal property of Congress. Mitra, who participated in a march from Subodh Mullick Square to Gandhi statue at Mayo Road to mark 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, said that both TMC government at State and BJP-led government at Centre do t understand principles of Mahatma Gandhi.

"Hence, y should stop pretending to respect Gandhiji and his struggle. Only those (political parties) who do t understand Gandhiji talk about about National Register of Citizens (NRC), driving out Muslims and communal divide in country," Mitra told reporters. West Bengal Congress President furr said that Mahatma Gandhi had fought for communal harmony throughout his life but those in power at Centre and State are determined to destroy that harmony to serve ir political purposes.

'We don't need to take lessons on Gandhiji from Congress'

Reacting to Mitra's statement, BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha said, "Mahatma Gandhi is Far of Nation. Congress should stop behaving as if Gandhiji is personal property of party and Nehru-Gandhi family." Sinha said that since Independence, Congress had tried to create impression as if Gandhiji and party were synymous, but that is t true. "We don't need to take lessons on Gandhiji from Congress," he asserted.

Marches and commemorative events marked 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi across state on Wednesday. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier in day said, revated Gandhi Bhavan in Beleghata area in eastern part of city, where Mahatma Gandhi had stayed for over three weeks during Independence to calm down rioters, would be inaugurated as a museum on occasion.
