The Tibetian government on Sunday passed a resolution pertaining to the succession of Dalai Lama. In a strong and clear message to China, the Tibetian Parliament-in-exile said that the successor of Dalai Lama will be chosen by the Tibetian spiritual leader himself. In addition, they also said that no country has a locus standi on the issue.
Tibetian government passes a resolution
"No nation, government, entity or any individual can claim to recognise the reincarnation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The final authority on decisions regarding the reincarnation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama rests indisputably and completely with His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself and the concerned authorities of the Gaden Phodrang Trust," Speaker Pema Jungney, Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile said.

The development comes ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to India. The statement was released after a special meeting chaired by the Tibetian Parliament-in-exile at the Tibetian headquarters. During the course of the meeting, the two-page resolution was adopted which rejected China's interference in the matters of the institution of Tibetian reincarnation. It also affirms the supreme authority of Dalai Lama over Tibetian Buddhism.

The document also challenged China's advancing measures of control over Tibetian Buddhism. It also rejected the Order No. 5, a regulation issued in 2007 by China's State Administration of Religious Affairs (SARA) for the so-called "management of the reincarnation of living Buddhas". The meeting saw an attendance of around 340 Tibetian authorities representing the three pillars of Tibetian democracy - The Kashag (cabinet); Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile and Tibetan Supreme Justice Commission.

United States on successor of Dalai Lama
Earlier in September, the US thought of putting down a rule in terms of restricting China on selecting its successor for the sacred spiritual position. Being over 80 years old, the spiritual leader in exile has toned down his travel expeditions and was hospitalized due to an infection in his chest with no confirmation of him suffering from serious health conditions. The Tibetan policy and Support Act of 2019 which was recently tabled in the American Congress states that it would initiate a penalty against any person from China if there is any interference in the Tibetan matters and the practices of succession.
