New Delhi: “Time for us to shed the colonial mindset”, said Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while presenting 3 criminal amendment bills in Rajya Sabha.  On the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, 2023 and the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, 2023,  Shah asserted that the motive of the three Bills  is not to punish but to give justice..." “We brought a reform. In 2020, I wrote a letter to the SCs, administrators etc, since 2020-23 I worked on the reforms and today I table the Bill before you. Those who say when it will be implemented, so I want to tell it's not the Congress government, it is the PM Modi-led BJP government”, said the Home Minister, taking potshots at the Opposition.  

Criminal Law Bills: Key points from Amit Shah's address in Rajya Sabha 

  • Soul, body and idea of new criminal laws are pure ‘Bharatiya’, said Shah. 
  • Only those who are pro-nation will appreciate it, those who have worn Italian spectacles will not be able to see good in these Bills, said Amit Shah, taking potshots at Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.  
  • 82 pc of work of the integration of various databases completed before the passage of new criminal law bills, said Shah. 
  • "We have to free the country from terrorism. Our government had pledged to make the Ram Mandir, they said the inauguration date will not be disclosed and now the whole country knows that it will be inaugurated on Jan 22", said Shah. 
     
  • Replying to a debate in the Rajya Sabha on the three bills to replace colonial-era criminal laws, Shah said the government had made a clear distinction between the British-era definition of sedition (Rajdroh – offences against the government) and 'Deshdroh' – offences against the state.
  • After its complete implementation, from the filing of the FIR to the judgement, the entire process will be online..., said Shah in Rajya Sabha.  
  • The implementation of new criminal laws will ensure an end to 'tareekh pe tareekh' era and justice will be given in three years."
