Chennai: A retired army officer from Madurai succumbed to bullet injuries in an accidental gunfire after the gun accidentally misfired a shot.

Rajendran, a retired army officer from Madurai, became a victim of an accidental gun misfire while cleaning his weapon. Having served in the Indian army for 23 years, Rajendran had transitioned to a job in a private bank where he was assigned security duties, including the authorized possession of a firearm.

Karimedu police swiftly responded, registering a case and initiating an ongoing investigation. While the incident appears to be an accidental misfire, the police are also exploring the possibility of suicide, given Rajendran's absence from work for the past 20 days. The investigation aims to ascertain the true cause behind the unfortunate incident, considering both angles to provide a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances leading to Rajendran's demise," said a police officer privy to the probe.

On Saturday morning, as part of the routine submission process at the police station, Rajendran was cleaning his gun on the terrace of his house. Unfortunately, an accidental trigger pull resulted in the firearm misfiring, with the bullet striking him in the stomach area. Despite immediate efforts by his family and neighbors rushing to the scene, Rajendran succumbed to his injuries on the way to the Rajaji Government Medical College Hospital.
