Triple Talaq Bill passed: Kiran Mazumdar Shaw hails it as a 'good omen for women's stature in society'
Hailing the passage of the Triple Talaq Bill by both parliamentary houses, Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, on Wednesday, stated that it was a good omen for women's stature in society adding that the archaic practice was a disrespectful to Muslim women.

Rajya Sabha passes Triple Talaq Bill
Earlier on Tuesday, in a historic move, Muslim Woman (Protection of Rights on Marri) Bill, 2019 or contentious Triple Talaq Bill has been passed in Rajya Sabha by 99-84 votes. Despite demand of Opposition parties, Rajya Sabha rejected motion to send Triple Talaq Bill to a select panel by 100-84 votes.
Law Minister moved triple talaq bill in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday for pass after Lok Sabha passed Bill last week for second time. Prior to that, Bill h been passed in Lok Sabha on December 2017, during first tenure of Modi government.
Bill which makes practice of instant triple talaq (talaq-e-biddat) a penal offence, was opposed by opposition parties which claimed that jail term for husband for divorcing his wife was legally untenable. government h promulgated ordinance on triple talaq twice.

What is Triple Talaq Bill?
Under Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marri) Bill, 2019, divorcing through instant Triple Talaq will be illegal, void and would attract a jail term of three years for husband.

While bill makes triple talaq a "n-bailable" offense, an accused can approach a magistrate even before trial to seek bail. In a n-bailable offence, bail cant be granted by police at police station itself.
