Maha CM Uddhav Thackeray writes to PM Modi, seeks classical language status for Marathi
Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has requested the PM to intervene in speeding up the process concerning recognition of Marathi as a classical language.

According to a press release issued by Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Tuesday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting latter to personally intervene in speeding up process concerning recognition of Marathi as a “classical langu”. In letter, Thackeray mentions that an expert committee established by government of Maharashtra h prepared a report recommending grant of classical langu status to Marathi. He ted that state h submitted a proposal based on this to Centre on vember 16, 2013.

Proposal pending with Ministry of Culture
Thackeray elaborated that Marathi, official langu of Maharashtra fulfilled criteria to attain classical langu status. He pointed out that despite repeated reminders, proposal was still pending with Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Maharashtra CM revealed that matter h been referred to Sahitya Akemi’s Langu Committee for consideration. Finally, he again reiterated his demand seeking PM’s intervention in ensuring that Marathi got classical langu status.

Classical langu status under 'active consideration'
re has been a consistent demand from many states for promotion of ir respective official langus for many years. In 2004, Tamil was first langu to be granted classical langu status. This was followed by Sanskrit in 2005, Telugu in 2008, Kanna in 2008, Malayalam in 2013 and Odia in 2014. criteria opted by Centre to determine eligibility of a langu for classical langu status includes its recorded history over a period of 1500-2000 years, a body of ancient literature, wher its literary trition is original and t borrowed from ar speech community and or yardsticks.

In July 2019, Union Culture Minister Prahl Patel informed Parliament that proposal for granting classical langu status to Marathi was under active consideration. He stated that Mras High Court h dismissed petitions against it. He gave this information in reply to a question in Rajya Sabha. minister stated, " proposal is again under active consideration in consultation with or ministries and committee of linguistic experts through () Sahitya Akemi."
