UGC recommends Delhi University, Madras, Kharagpur IITs for Institution of Eminence status

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recommended that Delhi University, BHU, Hyderabad University and IIT Madras and Kharagpur be granted Institution of Eminence (IoE) status by the HRD Ministry, officials said on Friday.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recommended that Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Hyderabad University and IIT Madras and Kharagpur be granted Institution of Eminence (IoE) status by the HRD Ministry, officials said on Friday.

Among universities that have got the UGC recommendation for issuing a letter of intent are Jamia Hamdard University, OP Jindal Global University, Shiv Nadar University. However, universities which failed to grab the IoE status are Aligarh Muslim University, Tezpur University and Ashoka University as they couldn't make the cut for IoE status, officials said. Over 20 names were announced for the IOE tag. Other notable institutions on the list include names like IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi and IISc.

As per reports, the University Grants Commission has maintained that Delhi University, BHU, Hyderabad University, IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur be granted IOE status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). The IoE project for modernising the Indian campuses for the transformation of these universities was announced by the HRD Ministry in September 2017. The move was announced to match up to the status of world-class universities.

There are other recommendations like Reliance's Jio University, the Satya Bharati University which is supported by the Satya Bharati Foundation of Bharti Airtel group. Andhra Pradesh's Krea University has also been recommended. Initially, 11 institutes were recommended in 2018 apart from the six that were announced in 2017. The HRD Ministry's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)-ranked  IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, Jadavpur University, Delhi University and Anna University.

Under the private category, names like Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Coimbatore, VIT in Vellore, Jamia Hamdard University in New Delhi, Shiv Nadar University, Azim Premji University, Ashoka University, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in Bhubaneswar, OP Jindal Global University, Indian Institute for Human Settlements and Institute of Public Health Sciences in Telangana have come up for the IoE status.
