UN in India welcomes PM Modi's 21-day nationwide lockdown to fight coronavirus outbreak
United Nations Resident Coordinator in India, Renata Dessallien, welcomed PM Narendra Modi's decision of a 21-day nationwide lockdown.

United Nations Resident Coordinator in India, Renata Dessallien, on Wednesday welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision of a 21-day nationwide lockdown to check spre of Coronavirus in country. She also said that PM Modi's call for social distancing is an important step to flatten curve of dely pandemic.
" UN system in India is fully mobilised and rey to furr step up its support to Government of India to fight COVID-19. I believe that if we work toger, we can overcome one of greatest health threats of our lifetimes," said Dessallien.
UN ncies, including World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF, are battling against Coronavirus at forefront with Government of India, both at Central as well as State-level. ncies are coordinating preparedness, response measures, disease surveillance, laboratory and research protocols, risk communications, infection prevention, control training, cluster containment plan, surveillance and tracking of travellers.

UN praises India's approach to tackle pandemic
On Tuesday, Dessallien, along with WHO Representative to India, Dr Henk Bekedam, met with Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan, and praised Indian Government for its "early and robust response" to COVID-19. United Nations officials also appreciated that Centre has taken a Whole-of-Government Approach to deal with pandemic. officials also discussed steps to curtail stigma and stereos attached to COVID-19.

UN has been coordinating with various or countries to flatten curve of disease. On March 1, UN released USD 15 million from Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to provide aid to vulnerable countries fighting spre of COVID-19.

In a bid to break chain of transmission and stem spre of coronavirus in India, PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday anunced a nationwide lockdown for three weeks. As of w, India has reported 562 positive cases of coronavirus, as per Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
