Union Minister Jitendra Singh posts old Cong video on NPR, asks 'What's different now?'

Amid the ongoing row over National Population Register, Union Minister Jitendra Singh posted an old video nailing the alleged contradictory stance of Congress.

Amid ongoing row over National Population Register, Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office Dr. Jitendra Singh on Thursday posted an old video nailing alleged contrictory stance of Congress. In video, n Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is dressing a press briefing on NPR. Maintaining that NPR was mandatory in nature, he brushed aside concerns that it could inconvenience citizens. Chidambaram opined that it was “t a big issue” as people gared for many occasions such as a wedding and temple festival.

In video, P Chidambaram is heard saying, “Once he goes voluntarily. To Ahaar, he goes voluntarily. To NPR camp, he would have to attend first and second camp mandatorily. And this is t a big issue. People gar many times in a year for a temple festival, for death, for a marri. If you come from a vill as I do you will understand- garing in a vill is t a great thing. People do gar and people gar many times.”

What is NPR?

NPR is a register of usual residents of country being prepared at local (vill/sub-town), sub-district, district, state and national level under provisions of Citizenship Act 1955 and Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003. It is mandatory for every usual resident of India to register in NPR. Under NPR, a usual resident is defined as a person who has resided in a local area for past six months or more or a person who intends to reside in that area for next six months or more. It was first prepared in 2010 and updated in 2015.

Briefing media on decisions of Cabinet on Tuesday, Union Minister Prakash Javekar anunced that NPR would be updated. He revealed that funds worth Rs.3941.35 crore h been sanctioned by Cabinet for this purpose. Moreover, he clarified that it h relation with National Register of Citizens.
