UP: Police officer commits suicide after an argument with his wife

A 42-year-old Policeman from Uttar Pradesh committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his residence after a scuffle with his wife

A 42-year-old Policeman committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his residence. The deceased has been identified as Brijesh Kumar. According to reports, Brijesh had an argument with his wife over his late coming after which he locked himself inside his room on Sunday.

His wife Maya tried to call out to him on Tuesday but there was no response. She presumed he may have gone out from another door inside the room, later in the evening she peeped inside the room only to find Brijesh Dead. His wife then alerted the neighbours who rushed Brijesh to a hospital where he was declared dead. The police were called after which the body was sent for post mortem. Sources close to Brijesh reveal that he used to close himself inside his room if he was upset over something.

This is yet another addition to the growing list of suicides by police personnel. On October 8, constable Raj Ratan Varma committed suicide after doing 20-hour shifts. In September, Sub Inspector Dharmendra Kumar Mishra ended his life over frequent transfers. Earlier, in August, head constable Devi Shankar Mishra committing suicide alleging victimisation by seniors in the department.

930 police personnel have committed suicide in the last five years

Union Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir said 90 paramilitary personnel have committed suicide in 2016, 121 in 2017 and 96 in 2018. Besides, a total of 165, 167, and 157 police personnel, including civil and armed forces, in the country have committed suicide in 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively, he said in reply to a written question. The Minister had said the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) had conducted a study in 2004 into the factors causing stress, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) did a similar study in 2012 for BSF and CRPF personnel. Over 930 police personnel, including those from the paramilitary forces, have committed suicide in the last five years, the Minister added.
