Uproar in J&K Assembly After PDP MLA Waheed Para Moves Resolution Opposing Abrogation of Article 370

Srinagar: Tensions ran high in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday as PDP MLA Waheed ur Rehman Para introduced a resolution opposing abrogation of Article 370 and calling for restoration of special status to union territory. move sparked an immediate response, particularly from BJP legislators who voiced strong objections.

resolution, proposed by Pulwama MLA, came soon after National Conference (NC) leer Abdul Rahim Rar was elected as first Speaker of legislative assembly for union territory. "Keeping sentiments of people of J&K in mind, this House opposes revocation of special status (of Jammu and Kashmir)," Para declared, as he introduced resolution.

PDP Supremo Mehbooba Mufti lauded PDP leer for introducing resolution in assembly. "Proud of Waheed Parra for introducing resolution in JK Assembly opposing revocation of Article 370 and resolve to restore special status God bless you," Mehbooba Mufti wrote in a post on X.

In response, BJP MLAs rose in unison, with Sham Lal Sharma demanding Para’s suspension, citing a breach of assembly procedures. Rar attempted to restore order, requesting that protesting members return to ir seats, but his calls went unheeded. Rar clarified that he h yet to receive resolution formally and assured that he would examine it upon receipt.

Reacting to development, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned Para’s actions, asserting that such resolutions cant be unilaterally introduced. " single member can take a decision on issue of Article 370. Resolutions cant be introduced like this. This is thing but politics," he stated, urging Speaker to journ House.

Abdullah furr criticised resolution and said, "We knew that preparation for this was being me by a member... reality is that people of J&K do t approve of decision taken on 5th August 2019. If y h approved, n results today would have been different. How House will reflect and discuss this will t be decided by any one member. resolution brought today has importance but it is only for cameras."

In last Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election, Congress -National Conference alliance won 49 seats out of 90. BJP won 29 seats in election. Assembly election was held after a gap of 10 years and since abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. NC leer Omar Abdullah was sworn in as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on September 16.
