Upset over friends leaving the school after taking admission in the science stream, a 16-year-old student allegedly died by suicide inside his school’s hostel.

New Delhi: Upset over friends leaving the school after taking admission in the science stream, a 16-year-old student allegedly died by suicide inside his school’s hostel in Delhi. The deceased, a class 11th student, was reportedly upset after his friends left the school and were admitted to the science stream somewhere else and he was bound to continue in the same school with the Arts stream. The incident occurred in the Jaffarpur Kalan police station area of Dwarka district, following which the police reached the spot and rushed the boy to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.

The police shifted the body to the mortuary of a hospital for post-mortem. Further legal action is being taken on the matter. The deceased has been identified as Kunal Rai, a Nangloi’s Rani Khera resident.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka), Ankit Kumar Singh stated that on July 25, the Jaffarpur Kalan police received information regarding the suicide of a student of class 11th. “Upon reaching Kalinga Institute of Social Science School, a boy namely Kunal Rai, aged 16 years was found dead in a dormitory of the school,” the DCP said.

At the spot, the classmate of the deceased reported that Kunal was upset as his friends had left school and had taken the science stream elsewhere as the stream was not available in the school.

“His father counselled him (deceased) to continue in the school with the Arts stream. The child was feeling lonely and upset. On 25 July, 2024, at about 6 am, he died by suicide by hanging himself with an iron bar of the ceiling by a torn bedsheet,” DCP Singh stated.

The police official further added that there was a visible ligature mark on his neck. The body was shifted to RTRM Hospital. “An autopsy was conducted and the body was handed over to his parents. No foul play suspected so far,” the police official asserted.

Further legal action into the matter is underway.
