VIDEO: Agra Teacher Dies of Heart Attack After Scammers Lie About Daughter's Sex Racket

Agra: In a shocking incident, a government school teacher in Agra died from a heart attack after falling victim to a 'digital arrest' scam. The victim's family reported on Thursday that scammers falsely claimed her daughter had been caught in a sex racket.

The incident occurred on September 30. Scammers allegedly demanded Rs one lakh from the teacher, threatening to expose her daughter if she didn’t pay. Unable to cope with the stress, Malti Verma, a 58-year-old teacher at Junior High School in Achhnera, Agra, suffered a heart attack and died on the spot.

Her son, Deepanshu Rajput, told PTI, "My mother received a WhatsApp call at noon, where the caller claimed that my sister was involved in a sex scandal. They even sent a photo of a police officer to make the threat seem real."

The scammers sent a Pakistani phone number, demanding one lakh rupees to keep the matter quiet. When her son noticed the international number, he immediately suspected a scam and reassured his mother. He also confirmed with his sister that nothing was wrong.

"I told my mother it was a cyber fraud and not to worry, but she couldn’t shake her anxiety," Deepanshu added. After returning home from school, she complained of chest pain and anxiety. Her condition deteriorated, and she was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead due to cardiac arrest.

Anandveer Singh, the in-charge at Jagdishpura police station, told PTI, "We have received a complaint from the family, and appropriate action will be taken."

What is Digital Arrest?

'Digital arrest' is a new form of cyber scam in which victims are coerced into staying on video calls for hours, while scammers extort money. There is no legal concept of a digital arrest.
