In a bid to ensure students drink an adequate quantity of water for keeping themselves hydrated, the Puducherry government on Monday introduced three "water breaks" in all schools in the union territory. The scheme under the banner "Water Bells" would provide 10-minute breaks at 10.30 am, noon and at 2.30 pm during which the students would consume water, an official said. Puducherry is the latest to introduce the health-centric measure after some states, including Kerala, Odisha and Karnataka.

Teachers should ensure that children take water without fail during the break, the official said. An official source said the water break had been provided as it had been seen most of the children who bring water bottles do not drink the water fully. It was feared that children might develop urinary infection and other health issues for want of adequate intake of water.
