New Delhi: Sanjeev Kumar Singla, a seasoned diplomat from the 1997 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to France. 

1.Appointment as Ambassador to France

He is currently vacating his role as the Ambassador to Israel amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, following the Israel-Palestine crisis. Singla is expected to take up his new position in France shortly, succeeding his notable work in Israel.

2.Shaping India’s Diplomatic Ties with Israel

Before his appointment to France, Singla played a key role in managing India’s diplomatic relations with Israel. He was appointed as the Ambassador to Israel in October 2019, during which time he managed the Indian diaspora, consisting of around 18,000 professionals and students, as well as 85,000 Jews of Indian origin. His extensive experience in Israel, spanning over multiple tenures, earned him the reputation of an “expert on Israel”, according to reports.

Singla’s contribution to shaping India’s foreign policy towards Israel has been described as significant. He handled sensitive matters, particularly the complex Israel-Palestine conflict, with caution and diplomacy. His careful approach to these issues ensured that India maintained balanced relations in the region during volatile times.

4.Private Secretary to the Prime Minister

In addition to his work in Israel, Singla was a close aide to Prime Minister Narendra Modi , serving as his private secretary for five years following Modi's assumption of office in 2014. During this period, Singla contributed to high-level decision-making and was involved in crucial foreign policy decisions, including those related to West Asia. According to reports, his tenure was one that helped steer India's diplomatic strategies in the region, especially concerning Israel.

5.A Diplomat with Global Experience

Beyond his expertise in Israel, Singla brings a wealth of global experience. He has served in various capacities across Indian Missions, including in Paris (France), Dhaka ( Bangladesh ), and Geneva (Switzerland). His previous posting in Paris has familiarized him with France, making him a strong candidate for the role of Ambassador. He has also held important positions within the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), such as working on the US desk and serving as director in the office of the Foreign Secretary.
