New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar sharply criticized certain non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for their perceived silence on the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

Speaking at the Rashtriya Military College in Dehradun on Sunday, Dhankhar accused these NGOs of failing to address the incident, which he described as a “heinous crime.”

“Certain NGOs who are usually quick to react to various incidents are silent on this issue,” Dhankhar said, as reported by PTI. “Their silence is much worse than the culpable acts of the perpetrators.”

Dhankhar’s remarks follow his previous statements condemning the crime and calling for stringent measures to deter such violence.

On Friday, he had labeled the incident as “painful” and emphasized the need for a robust system to punish the offenders.

The Vice President also criticized Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Kapil Sibal, who had reportedly described the incident as a “symptomatic malaise,” suggesting that such crimes are common.

Dhankhar expressed strong disapproval of Sibal's comments, calling them shameful and an injustice to the victims. “I am appalled; I am pained and somewhat surprised,” Dhankhar said. “For partisan or self-interest to leverage authority to perpetrate such injustice is unacceptable.”
