Mumbai: Nithin Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha and a well-known entrepreneur, recently shared why he keeps his phone permanently on silent, a revelation that quickly gained attention online. His insights came in response to a social media post about Zerodha’s unique approach to customer notifications.

In a world where smartphones have become essential for communication, many still choose to keep their phones on silent—Kamath among them. Responding to a social media user's praise for Zerodha’s policy of refraining from sending frequent notifications, Kamath offered a glimpse into the company’s philosophy. The post, originally on X, read, “The only broker that never pushes you to trade in any form whatsoever is @zerodhaonline. No notifications, no emails, nothing. It’s remarkable how they’ve grown so much.”

Kamath reshared the post on Instagram, explaining why Zerodha avoids engagement tactics that could annoy customers, even if it affects business in the short term. “With everybody chasing ‘engagement,’ we’ve made many things on the internet annoying and unusable,” he wrote. “Since day one, our philosophy has been ‘don’t do unto others what you don’t want done unto you.’”

“We don’t send an email or notification unless it’s important. Not triggering users to trade may hurt business, but in the long run, it builds trust,” Kamath explained, adding that his phone remains on silent due to the “annoyance of constant calls, notifications, and emails.”
