Mahalaya Amavasya 2024: Celebrating Ancestors and the Dawn of Durga Puja

Mahalaya Amavasya, or Pitru Paksha Amavasya, marks the conclusion of Pitru Paksha—a 15-day period dedicated to honoring ancestors. In 2024, this significant date falls on October 2, signaling the onset of the festive season, particularly the arrival of Durga Puja. This day is described as “a time filled with deep reverence and spiritual connection to one’s ancestors,” where rituals ensure their peace in the afterlife.

Mahalaya Amavasya serves as a moment for remembrance and gratitude toward ancestors. According to Hindu beliefs, during this period, the souls of the departed visit their descendants. The day is closely linked to Durga Puja celebrations, especially in West Bengal, where it is believed that Goddess Durga begins her journey to Earth, bringing joy to her devotees. 

Key Rituals  

The most important rituals on this day are Tarpan and Shradh. Tarpan involves offering water mixed with sesame seeds and flowers to ancestors, while Shradh includes feeding Brahmins and offering food to crows—seen as messengers of the ancestors. In places like Gaya and Varanasi, Pind Daan is performed, where rice balls (Pinda) are offered to departed souls. These rituals are believed to provide nourishment and peace to ancestors, assisting them in attaining salvation.

Devotees often observe a fast on Mahalaya Amavasya, excluding non-vegetarian food, garlic, and onions. Many engage in charitable acts, donating food and essentials to those in need, which are thought to bring peace to ancestors and good fortune to the family.

Traditional Customs  

In West Bengal, a traditional custom involves listening to 'Mahishasura Mardini,' an early morning radio program narrating the story of Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon, Mahishasura. This marks the spiritual beginning of Durga Puja celebrations.
