New Delhi: On October 21, India observes Police Commemoration Day annually. This day serves as a reminder to honor the ultimate sacrifice of policemen who died in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in 1959.

The day is marked to remember the valor and commitment shown by police personnel.

Why is Police Commemoration Day observed on October 21?

In 1959, during heightened tensions between India and China, a group of Indian policemen was on a reconnaissance mission at Hot Springs in Aksai Chin. Chinese troops attacked the Indian men without warning, leading to the death of several policemen. Their bodies were returned 23 days later on November 13, 1959.

The Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police, held in January 1960, declared October 21 as Police Commemoration Day to honor this sacrifice.

Police Commemoration Day: Significance

Police Commemoration Day honors the courageous police officers and the sacrifices made by police personnel across the country. It highlights the daily risks police officers take to maintain law and order, protect citizens, and face dangers in the line of duty.
