Did you know there are different flag traditions for the national flag?

The tricolor is hoisted by the Prime Minister on August 15th, whereas it is unfurled by the President of India on January 26th. As India celebrates its 78th Independence Day with great enthusiasm and zeal today, this day serves as a reminder of the struggle of our freedom fighters for our independence. The country is filled with national flags, so it's essential to understand the significance of different flag traditions.

Difference Between Hoisting and Unfurling:

While the terms 'hoisting' and 'unfurling' are often used interchangeably, when it comes to the tricolor, they should be used only after knowing the significance of the two ceremonies. The contrast lies in the National flag's position during the two ceremonies. On August 15th, Independence Day, the flag is positioned at the bottom of the pole and is raised (hoisted) by the Prime Minister from the bottom to the top. On Republic Day, the President of India unfurls the Flag, meaning the flag is already tied at the top of the flagpole and remains folded. The flag is opened by the President without pulling it up. Republic Day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950. The flag is unfurled as a figurative gesture to restart the commitment and responsibility to the principles laid down in the Constitution, highlighting the shift from colonial rule to a sovereign, democratic republic.

Why is the Flag Hoisted on Independence Day?

Independence Day celebrates the day we actually gained our independence. The Prime Minister hoists the flag from the bottom of the pole in the historical Red Fort. Other ceremonial events with flag hoisting are conducted, including a military or civilian honor guard raising the flag while the national anthem is played. The hoisting on Independence Day symbolizes the rise of a new nation, patriotism, and freedom from colonial rule.
