Dehydration in pets: Know signs to look out for to prevent decline in health among fur babies

Dehydration is a serious health condition that can lead to a serious decline in health even resulting in death. Not just humans, but animals too are susceptible to this condition. Dehydration in animals however, is a trickier onset to spot considering the many variable factors that impact it. Hydration needs in pet are contingent on their age, size and overall health conditions. However, there are a few signs pet parents should keep an eye out for to prevent dehydration among pets.

External indicators

There are several tell-tale signs when it comes to figuring out if one's fur baby is suffering from dehydration. The most obvious among these is a dry mouth. Pet's gums must be moist and not tacky and dry. Sunken eyes are another factor that is noticeable right away. If your pet suddenly appears wrinklier than usual, it may be a sign of dehydration - lifting the skin of the back of your pet's neck may be a good indicator of the same.

There are also some external indicators which require slightly more awareness and tracking. Dark and concentrated urine in pets can be an indicator of dehydration. Not just this, if your pet tends to be panting more than usual a quick visit to the vet is immediately suggested.

Internal indicators

While external indicators will make for the most obvious signs of dehydration among pets, internal indicators too can be tracked. Foremost among this is a sudden drop in energy. If your pet is not performing physical activities as efficiently as it usually does, there is cause for concern.

Besides this, a sudden loss in appetite can also be indicative of dehydration. Conditions like heatstroke can further exasperate this condition.
