Teachers' Day is annually celebrated on September 5 in India to commemorate birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Rhakrishnan, second President of India (1962–1967), who was also first Vice President of India from (1952–1962).
History
Dr. Rhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, in Tamil Nu. Before becoming Vice President and President of India, he served as a professor at University of Calcutta, University of Mysore, and Oxford University in 1936.

He was known as a distinguished scholar and teacher. Throughout his lifetime, he earned many accoles, including being awarded Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in 1954.
In 1963, he also received an honorary membership in British Royal Order of Merit.

How did Teachers’ Day come into being?
According to reports, in 1962, when he became President of India, students and mirers paid him a visit suggesting to celebrate his birthday on September 5. However, Dr. Rhakrishnan proposed that day be dedicated to honouring teachers inste. That is how September 5 came to be celebrated as Teachers' Day in India.
