Ashha Purnima means a Full Moon day or Purnima that occurs in Hindu month of Ashha. This is an auspicious occasion for Hindus, and hence on this day, devotees worship Lord Vishnu and observe Gopam Vrat. Ashha Purnima is also kwn as Guru Purnima, a full moon day because on this day, people also seek blessings of ir guru or mentors.

Significance of Ashha Purnima

Lunisolar calendar or Purnimanta Panchang shows that each month is named on  full moon date based on constellation in which Moon is placed. It is believed that in Ashha month, on full moon day, Moon takes its place in Purvasha or Uttarasha Nakshatra. And hence, on Full moon date of Ashha month, Moon is in Uttarasha nakshatra, and that (full moon) Purnima is considered as a very auspicious and fortunate one for those seeking prosperity and wealth.

Ashha Purnima also involves devotees performing Gopam Vrat and offering special devotions to Lord Vishnu. It is said that Gopam Vrat is very abundant, fruitful and bestows all kinds of blessings and pleasure to  observer. As day Ashha Purnima is celebrated as Guru Purnima, day has extreme significance in Hindu and Buddhist cultures. On Ashha Purnima, devotees and believers seek blessings of ir Guru and follow ir teachings. 

History of Ashha Purnima

As per Hindu religious books,  greatest s and author of epic Mahabharata, Maharishi Krishna Dwaipayana Vyasa or popularly identified as Ved Vyas was born on this day of Ashha Shukla Paksha Purnima. And hence people celebrate this day, which is also called as Vyas Purnima. On this day, approximately 2500 years ago, Lord Buddha h his first sermon at Sarnath, this is strongly believed in Buddhist culture.

Here are rituals to perform Gopam Vrat on Ashha Purnima

  • As per Hindu texts, re are some special rituals that are performed on auspicious Ashha Purnima Gopam Vrat. People visit temples or even worship god at home on this day. So, here are rituals that should be performed on Ashha Purnima.
  • Waking up early in morning, and after taking a bath, getting rey and wearing clean clos.
  • Worshipping God by offering prayers or reciting name of Lord Vishnu throughout day is one of essential things to do on this day. People also re or listen to Satyanarayan Katha for abundant benefits.
  • Lighting some earn lamps or Diyas, using flowers and Dhup for Lord Vishnu. Devotees should wear yellow clos on this day and distribute grains and sweets as charity.
  • Praying to Goddess Lakshami under a Peepal tree in morning of Ashha Purnima is ar ritual and devotees gain peace and prosperity. 
  • On Gopam Vrat, people worship cows and feed m, by applying tilak on he of cow and seek its blessings.
