Jhumpa Lahiri is an American author of Indian descent. The writer was born in London to a Bengali Indian immigrant family. She has received multiple degrees from Boston University: an M.A. in English, M.A. in Comparative Literature, M.A. in Creative Writing, and PhD in Renaissance Studies. The writer won the Pulitzer Prize for her 2000 release Interpreter of Maladies.

The Namesake

Jhumpa Lahiri’s most famous work is The Namesake which was published in the year 2003. The Namesake is a diasporic novel that traces the story of the Ganguli family. The family shifts to America from Calcutta and thus the story starts unravelling. The book looks at the themes of family, identity, parental love, and nostalgia. The novel was adapted into a movie starring Tabu, Irrfan Khan, Kal Penn, and Sahira Nair in 2006.

Interpreter of Maladies

Interpreter of Maladies was published in the year 2000. Lahiri looked at the Indian traditions and their mix with the modern new world. It is a collection of short stories. The title story looks at an interpreter who takes an American couple through the journey of India and its culture.

The Lowland
