To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

The book, published in 1960, became an immediate literature classic. The story covers the racism happening in southern USA through its main protagonist, a small girl named Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. In this story, the protagonist’s father, Atticus Finch, is a role model to the little girl and also changes the way how caucasians looked at the other races. He does it while the tension between the communities was very high. To Kill a Mockingbird earned the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961.

A Passage to India by E.M. Forster

The book was published in the year 1924, after the author's many visits to India. The book tells the fictional story of a Muslim Indian doctor named Aziz and his relationship with an English professor, Cyril Fielding. The story is set in the fictional city of Chandrapore, and it is a tale about the rising tension between the Indian community and the colonial British community. The book colourfully describes the nature and landscape of India.

Ulysses by James Joyce:

The book was first published in the year 1922. The story is parallel to that of the poem the Odyssey. It is a story of a man named Leopold Bloom who is in Dublin. The book covers the ordinary day of Leopold Bloom and showcases the relationship between Ireland and Britain.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

The book was first published in the year 1955. This book revolves around the controversial premise of a professor being obsessed with a 12-year-old girl, Dolores Haze. He later becomes her stepfather and gets sexually involved with her. "Lolita" is a nickname given to her by her stepfather. The story was written in English and was later translated to Russian.

Moby Dick by Herman Melville

The book was first published in 1851. The saga revolves around Captain Ahab and his pursuit of the white whale. With all of its mythic grandeur, poetic majesty, and symbolic power, this is considered one of the best stories of English literature.
