According to Hindu calendar, Ekashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashha month is called Devshayani Ekashi. Puranas state that in se months, Lord Vishnu goes to sleep. After this, on Ekashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, yoga sleep of Lord Vishnu is completed. This Ekashi is called Devshayani Ekashi. According to Bhagwat Mahapuran, Shankhasura demon was killed on Ekashi date of Shukla Paksha of Ashha month. From that day God sleeps in Kshira sea for four months. According to mythology, on this day, Lord Vishnu goes to sleep or is in deep meditation and wakes up after four months on Prabodhini Ekashi. Devshyani Ekashi comes close on heels of Jagannath Rath Yatra mostly every year.

According to scriptures, Chaturmas starts from Devshayani Ekashi and 16 rites stop for four months. However, things like worship, rituals, entering repaired house, buying vehicles and jewellery can be done. This Ekashi is called Saubhagyini Ekashi. According to Pma Purana, fasting or fasting on this day kills sins kwn or invertently. On this day, worshipping through rituals les to salvation. According to Brahmavaivarta Purana, observing this fast also fulfils one's desires.
