According to the Hindu mythology, Dhanteras is celebrated as Laksmi Puja in the honour of Goddess Lakshmi. The Goddess is offered a ‘Naivaideya’ of traditional sweets consisting of dry fruits and devotional songs or bhajans are sung in the praise of the Goddess. To indicate the long-awaited arrival of the festival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder at the entrance of the house. Many people believe in buying gold and silver articles on the day of Dhanteras, as it is considered that the purchase of any new special metal brings fortune and wealth in the house. In rural areas, farmers decorate and adorn their cattle on the occasion of Dhanteras, which marks their respect towards their only source of income.
