Various types of sarees from Lucknow
Chikankari saree
It is impossible to talk of Lucknow without bringing up the Lucknow Chikankari design. The Chikankari method of designing is exclusive to Lucknow. Chikankari has its roots in the Mughal period, and back then, it was usually done on muslin cloth. Chikankari sarees primarily use floral motifs as their base design. To this day, Chikankari sarees are woven by hand by local artisans. Chikankari sarees are an absolute must-have since they can suffice as both day and nightwear.

Zardosi sarees
The Zardosi pattern of intricate embroidery was initially introduced to India by the Persians. Lucknow became a hub for the Zardosi embroidery during the reign of Aurangzeb when the artisans gained patronage under the different nobles. During the peak of its popularity, Zardosi workers used sequins, beads, and precious jewels to embellish their designs, although the practice was discontinued when these materials became expensive. Zardosi artisans travelled far and wide with their art, yet Lucknow continued to remain as its center of popularity. Zardosi sarees are reserved for festivities and special occasions. The thread used to weave the patterns on Lucknow’s sarees is usually made from a mixture of gold and silver.
