In a bold and unexpected move, Alessandro Michele unveiled his first resort collection for Valentino today. Known for his maximalist designs at Gucci, Michele's debut for the Roman fashion house features 171 ready-to-wear looks under the title Avant les Débuts. The collection's release has ignited widespread reaction across the internet and the fashion community.

Months ahead of Valentino's Spring 2025 collection, Michele, who joined the Maison on April 2, presented a comprehensive look book, just two months into his tenure. This comes shortly after Valentino announced the end of its 25-year collaboration with creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli. Michele's collection also includes a dedicated look book for accessories, featuring shoes and bags, further showcasing his intricate design style.

Internet Reactions: A split verdict

The unveiling has sparked mixed reactions online. Many praised Michele for his innovative approach, breathing new life into Valentino with his distinctive flair. Others, however, felt that his maximalist aesthetic overshadowed the brand's signature elegance and sophistication.

Fashion commentator Hanan Besovic, who runs the Instagram account @ideservecouture, humorously noted the timing of the release, coinciding with Gucci's show day. "Oh what a coincidence and not just a few looks but 171," Besovic quipped in a video, hinting at the strategic timing of Michele's showcase.

Instagram user @vieranny remarked, "It looks like Gucci. It was never Gucci; it was always Alessandro." Another user noted, "Little Valentino, very Gucci. Or very Alessandro, not very Valentino. The soul of the brand, in my opinion, should be maintained, and unfortunately, I don't perceive it here."

The contrasting opinions highlight a broader debate within the fashion industry about the balance between preserving a brand's heritage and evolving its identity under new creative leadership. Michele's daring vision for Valentino undoubtedly marks a new chapter, one that will continue to be scrutinized and celebrated in equal measure.

As the fashion world continues to digest Michele's bold debut, it remains to be seen how this fresh direction will shape the future of Valentino.
