Delhi
Delhi faces significant air quality challenges each winter, prompting the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to impose a comprehensive ban on the manufacturing, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers until January 1, 2025. This ban includes online sales, with exceptions only for 'green crackers,' which emit fewer harmful substances. These will be allowed for a limited time on Diwali from 8 PM to 10 PM, with similar hours for Gurpurab, Christmas , and New Year ’s Eve.
In Bihar , a complete ban on all firecrackers, including green alternatives, has been enacted in cities like Patna, Gaya, and Muzaffarpur. This decision aligns with directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and aims to ensure better air quality during the festivities.

Maharashtra and West Bengal
Both Maharashtra and West Bengal have adopted regulations consistent with NGT recommendations. They permit only green crackers, which generate approximately 30% less pollution compared to traditional options. However, enforcement remains a challenge, as illegal firecrackers can still enter these states from regions with less stringent regulations. Authorities are ramping up monitoring efforts to curb this illicit trade.
Haryana
Haryana has enacted similar rules, particularly in Gurugram, where the sale and use of green crackers are permitted during specified hours on Diwali and Gurpurab. The state government is actively promoting the use of green crackers to mitigate pollution levels.

Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu’s strategy includes designated time slots for firecracker use on Deepavali, specifically from 6 AM to 7 AM and 7 PM to 8 PM. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has issued guidelines encouraging responsible firecracker usage to minimize pollution and noise, while also collaborating with other agencies to educate the public on safe practices.
Karnataka
In Karnataka, residents are encouraged to use only green crackers during Diwali. Although there is no formal ban, the environment minister has proposed limiting firework usage to specific hours between 8 PM and 10 PM.
