As India celebrates World Students Day 2024, which coincides with Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam aka the 'Missile Man Of India's' 93rd birth anniversary, lets have a look at the major accomplishments of the south Asian nation's 11th President.

The 'People's President' took birth on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram in the Madras Presidency as Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, or APJ Abdul Kalam.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam's indelible contributions towards India's future

Kalam's career began at the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), where he designed a hovercraft before joining ISRO in 1969. He played a pivotal role in launching India's first satellite in 1980 and spearheaded ballistic missile projects, showcasing his expertise in aerospace technology.

Instrumental in securing funding for critical aerospace initiatives, Kalam gained recognition for his strategic vision and scientific acumen. As project director of ISRO , he successfully launched India's first Satellite Launch Vehicle, SLV III, and established the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station. His development of indigenous missiles, including Agni and Prithvi, earned him widespread acclaim.

Kalam later served as the principal scientific advisor, leading India's nuclear tests in 1998 and advocating for the ambitious Technology Vision 2020, which aimed to elevate India’s global status through advancements in technology, education, and healthcare. Despite some international criticism, his vision solidified his status as a national hero and a beacon of inspiration for future generations.
