While dal bhat, and momo dumplings from our neighbouring country Nepal are much-loved staple foods, the culinary delicacy foodies these days are raving about is Chukauni, a Nepali potato salad.

This simple-to-prepare salad allows you to relish the monsoon showers as you sit on the balcony watching the natural bliss occur. This Nepali dish works as a multi-purpose dish given it can served either as a salad or alongside rice, or Nepali staple food choices like sel-roti. Moreover, you can bet on it to enhance your dining experience due to its ability to satiate your taste buds and leave wanting more.

What is Chukauni?

Chukauni is a Nepali dish that originated from the Palpa district, usually made with boiled potatoes typically seasoned with a blend of spices such as chilli powder, cumin powder, and roasted sesame seeds powder, along with optional additions such as Sichuan pepper powder and mustard powder.

How can beginners make this scintillating Nepali salad?

Recipe

Step 1: In a bowl add 1-1.5 cup yoghurt and whisk until smooth. Then add 1/2 tsp red chilli powder, and 1 tsp salt, and mix it in.

Step 2: Add, 2 medium-boiled potatoes chopped in cubes, along with 2 green chillies finely chopped, 1 medium-sized onion, and a handful of coriander and mix this well.

Step 3: Now for the Tadka heat 1 tbsp Mustard oil, 1 tsp methi seeds and red chilli powder and add this Tadka to the salad.

Step 4: Mix well and then enjoy as is or with some rice! 

Step 5: Each Nepali household has its unique recipe for Chukauni, making it a beloved staple that's cherished for its simplicity and taste.
