The festive season has already kicked in. Starting with Navratri, we are moving towards the festival of lights, Diwali, and looking forward to the Christmas. Be it Diwali or Christmas, sweets and desserts are always the moods. During this festive season, you can try some unique deserts created from oranges and flex your baking skills. Oranges deliver the best tangy deserts. They are also quite easy to experiment with. Not all tangy and citrus fruits are used to preparing deserts, however, orange infusions often add just the kick a recipe needs. Below are some orange deserts that you can try this festive season.

Orange barfi

Barfi is an Indian dessert loved by every age group. Adding orange to it will just make it a tangy refreshing desert.

How to make:

  1. Preheat the oven with 350 degrees. Grease the baking pan, coating it with silver foil.
  2. For preparing the crust, mix the 1 cup flour, the 3 tablespoons powdered sugar, and the 1/4 teaspoon salt in a large bowl. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press the whole mixture on the baking pan and bake it for 15 minutes.
  3. Whisk a mixture of sugar, eggs, orange peel, orange juice and food colouring, trying to smoothen it. Stir in the 2 tablespoons flour and the 1/4 teaspoon salt. Pour orange mixture over the hot crust.
  4. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until set, and your orange barfi is ready. You can cut it in slabs or cubes.

Cookies are an all-time favourite for kids and giving them tangy candy taste will just make them fall in love with the dish.

How to make:

  1. Create a mixture of cream butter, sugar-salt and mix it until it becomes light and fluffy. Beat in egg, orange zest, orange juice and extract.
  2. Create a dough from the mixture and divide it into two halves. Shape each into a disk; wrap in plastic. Refrigerate for 1 hour, until it is firm enough to roll.
  3. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Roll each portion of dough to 1/4-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 2-1/2-in. cookie cutter. Place 1 in. apart on greased baking sheets.
  4. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until the edges are light brown. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool it completely.
  5. In a small bowl, mix confectioners' sugar, milk and, if desired, food colouring until it gets smooth. Pipe or spread over cookies; let it stand until it is set.
