Karwa Chauth is a predominantly North Indian festival. Sargi is a crucial part of the festival of Karwa Chauth. The woman who is observing Karwa Chauth is given a combination of foods by the mother-in-law. The sargi is a symbol of love and blessing by mother-in-law. It is supposed to be eaten early in the morning.
Here are the five food items that can be added in your sargi thali:
Pheni
Pheni is an important part of the Sargi thali. It is flaky rice-flour roasted in ghee. Pheni is also known as Khaja sweet or Suterfeni or Laccha. It can be used to make sweet dishes like seviyan kheer.
Fruits
Fresh fruits are a healthy addition to the sargi. As the observed fast is without water, these fresh fruits will be a great way to get all the lost hydration. Fruits like apples and bananas can be eaten. Citrus fruits like pomegranates and oranges can also be a good food item in sargi.
Dry fruits
Dry fruits are known to be packed with energy and nutrients. Things like pistachios, almonds, raisins and cashews can be a part of your sargi. The nutrients in these little superstars will keep you energised for the day.
Sweets
Indian sweets are the best way to celebrate any festival. The start of a whole day of fasting will not only be auspicious, but it will also give energy and purity. You can have sweets made of dry fruits so that they are nutritious. They will help you trudge through the day.
Mathri
Mathri brings the savoury and crunchy element in the sargi thali. Mathri or mathiya is a Punjabi flaky bread munchie which is spiced with carom seeds, black pepper, dry fenugreek leaves and jeera. It can be fried or baked. It also has a low-calorie point.
Karwa Chauth is celebrated in the form of a fast. The fast is not only observed without foods but also without water. Married women perform a pooja with the belief that it will ensure the continuous love between herself and her husband. It is also symbolic as it is a prayer to the Gods to give the husband long and fulfilling life.
