1. Relax

This is often the most overlooked aspect on the way to detox the body. Before diving into diets and foods, get yourself a good night's sleep. It was a tiring week and your body deserves the much-needed rest. Take it slow. Be at peace with yourself. Detox begins with the mind. So, clear out those negative thoughts first and let the positivity flow in.

2. Start with Water

Drink a glass of water the first thing in the morning. Avoid very cold water as it imbalances the fluids in your body and extinguishes the digestive fire. Warm or room temperature water is the best, which helps in flushing out the toxins from the body and cleanses your digestive tract. You can even store the water overnight in a copper or a silver vessel and drink that in the morning. Copper and silver have the ability to balance all the three doshas (vatta, pitta and kapha) by positively charging the water. It also has numerous anti-oxidants, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties. Make it a regular habit and your body would surely thank you later!

3. Have a Hearty Breakfast

There are plenty of options to choose from. Just don't go for those unhealthy ones, and I mean butter-smeared aloo parantha with that. Your body needs a healthy start, so give it that energy by eating a nutritious breakfast. Your breakfast should majorly consist of protein, some healthy fats and a small amount of carbs. Protein keeps you full for a longer time and provides you with the much-needed energy to go through the day. Combine legumes (beans, lentils, and peanuts) with grains (wheat, rice, and corn) to get a filling breakfast. Take some freshly squeezed juice along. An excellent source of protein is eggs, yoghurt or even cottage cheese (paneer).

4. Sip on Herbal Tea in-between Meals

Opt for a warm, herbal tea (without milk and sugar) like green tea, chamomile tea or just warm water with freshly squeezed lemon, preferably two hours after your meal. It would help with digestion and accelerate your metabolism. Along with its many antioxidant properties, these are a perfect way to cleanse your gut and relax your body. Do not ever consume them on an empty stomach else you are sure to get light-headed and nauseous.

5. Smoothies for Lunch

These might sound not so good but they are actually really tasty! It's not for nothing that these smoothies are a sensation all around. Combine bananas with other fruits, add some milk or yoghurt for the consistency and almonds for a bit of protein, blitz it all up and sprinkle some chia or flax seeds on it. It is as easy as that. There are many other recipes available around. Here's a quick recipe for a Green Banana Smoothie: Blend together a cup of spinach, a ripe banana (preferably frozen), a handful of almonds, a little milk (to check with the consistency) and some flax seeds and enjoy it right away. Filling, tasty, nutritious and it helps with moving the trash out of your body.

6. Snack Healthy

Come evening and the stomach starts to rumble again. Stop yourself from gorging on that tempting vada-pav or a samosa. Choose healthier snacks like a handful of dried fruits, some homemade granola or some fruits. Apples and Peanut butter is a conventional snack-match. You can also go for Yoghurt and fresh berries. Natural Greek Yoghurt with green apple or mangoes tastes heavenly. Have some dark chocolate and almonds. Another option is carrots or cucumber with hummus. Avoid artificially flavoured products or packed products.

7. End on a Lighter Note

Avoid the heavy, loaded meals in the evening. Opt instead for a bowl full of veggies with some dressing and a portion of bread by its side preferably two to three hours before retiring to bed. You can even a chapati roll with all the salad inside. End your day on a lighter note by going on a stroll. You can also sip on some cinnamon tea right before bed. Do not use your cell phone as the blue light can hinder with the sleep cycle.

8. Go for a Walk

All said and done, your body needs to burn the energy from all that food. Walks are an excellent way to keep the body moving. The best is going for a morning walk which gives you a gush of freshness. You'll surely experience a much energized day. There's the holiday tiredness, but not moving enough makes the body lethargic and drowsy. Walking makes the food to digest quickly and this, in turn, pushes it out of your body more effectively. A lighter tummy is the main motive of detox, right?

9. Avoid the Trap

At the end of the day, what matters is the choices that you make. No detox can work if you choose otherwise. It is okay to lapse sometimes. It is okay to eat not-so-healthy food once in a while and indulge yourself. But it is not okay to make that a regular habit. It is not okay to not take care of your body. You need this body till the time you die. So, make the right choice and avoid the trap.
