Cheese is a dairy product derived from milk, and it wouldn't be a stretch to say that many consider it both delicious and addictive. It is considered a good source of protein and calcium and it is also nutritious and considered to be healthy food. Cheese is available in different varieties and can be used in a number of ways. It can be consumed by itself, in sandwiches, in desserts, and more. But just like any other food, too much consumption of cheese may not be healthy and can lead to some health issues.
Take a look at the complications that may arise from overconsumption of cheese.
Higher cholesterol
One does not need to cut cheese out of their diet entirely, but it is advisable to use it sparingly, especially for those with high cholesterol levels. Consuming 50g cheese a day provides more than seven per cent of your daily calories. Cheese is also very high in saturated fats, which raises the levels of cholesterol in your body and may have a negative impact. High cholesterol level is directly associated with an elevated risk of deadly cardiovascular diseases which includes heart disease, stroke etc.
Leads to weight gain
Cheese is very high in calories, which leads to weight gain. It may seem a good option for people looking to put on weight owing to its high-calorie content, but relying solely on cheese would not be recommended. This is because while cheese does pack a good amount of essential nutrients and protein, you now know that it comes loaded with high amounts of cholesterol as well. However, one should not scare away from topping their favourite snack with a little portion of cheese, but for someone looking to meet their weight gain goals, there are many healthier alternatives.
Blood Pressure
Cheese is rich in many essential nutrients including sodium. Sodium is an electrolyte which helps to maintain the perfect balance of water and is required for muscle and nerve functioning, but an excess of sodium could be harmful. Since most junk foods contain salt, there is a high chance of overdosing on sodium. It is, therefore, advisable to go easy on cheese as it may increase blood pressure, which is a risk factor for major diseases.
In conclusion, an occasional nibble is totally fine as long as one does not go overboard.
